ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A day after the leader of the Iran-backed Hezbollah vowed retribution for Israel’s deadly explosions that targeted its communication devices, the militant group said they struck several military targets inside Israel.
Hezbollah launched "salvos of Katyusha rockets" against at least six Israeli "army headquarters" and bases, including a "main air defence base", while the Israeli army said some 140 rockets were fired into Israel territory “within an hour”.
The Hezbollah rocket attacks came after the Israeli army said it targeted rocket launchers belonging to Hezbollah south of Lebanon overnight, just hours after their chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed retaliation against arch-foe Tel Aviv.
Earlier today, Israel announced they hit over 100 infrastructure sites and launchers belonging to Hezbollah, with both conflicting sides now nearly engaging in cross-border daily exchanges of fire.
The near-daily cross-border exchanges have left hundreds killed in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters, tens of people in Israel, including soldiers, and a much significantly higher number of civilians who have borne the brunt of the conflict forced to flee for their lives.
In the meantime, multiple Syrian media outlets reported that Abu Haider al-Khaffaji, seen as a senior leader of Iran-backed Iraqi Kata’ib Hezbollah militia group was killed and his driver was severely injured in an Israeli airstrike on Friday near Damascus airport.
Communication devices, including pagers and walkie-talkies that Hezbollah members were carrying exploded on Tuesday and Wednesday, killing 37 and wounding over 3,500, according to the latest figures published by the Lebanese Health Ministry.
Israel was immediately blamed for sabotaging the pager devices, but Tel Aviv has yet to make any comment on the incident that was labelled as a “massacre” by Nasrallah, in a lengthy televised speech on Thursday.
Nasrallah said Israel had planned to kill 4,000 through the deadly blasts and “what happened was a major terrorist act.”
Hezbollah has received “threats through official and unofficial channels of more strikes” if they “do not cease fire” against Israel, the militant group chief claimed.
