Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament, expressed the country’s support for Hezbollah and other “resistance” forces against the Israeli regime which made a “miscalculation” by killing Hassan Nasrallah.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday said that the Israeli regime has made "a critical miscalculation,” claiming that the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah will only strengthen the will of “resistance” groups.

“This regime has made a critical miscalculation in its analysis, which will undoubtedly result in its failure again. The miscalculation lies in the fact that the resistance front is founded on deep Quranic principles and a belief in divine traditions,” said Ghalibaf during a closed session of the parliament to discuss the recent developments.

Pictures of Nasrallah were displayed during the session alongside a text reading “Hezbollah lives.”

While acknowledging that commanders such as Nasrallah have an effective role in the “resistance front” and their killing will cause serious damage, Ghalibaf stressed that their death does not “disrupt the foundation” of the groups, noting that Iran “will not allow any doubt to arise” when it comes to its support for the “resistance” in accordance with the religious decree of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The Israeli military announced on Saturday that Nasrallah was “eliminated” alongside other Hezbollah commanders in a strike on the group’s central headquarters “which was located underground embedded under a residential building” in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Hezbollah confirmed his death hours later.

The Iranian parliament speaker said that Israel has failed in achieving its goals on the battlefield since October 7 and has now resorted to killing “resistance” leaders to compensate for its shortcomings.

"It is very important to note that contrary to the image some have created in their minds, it is not the Zionist regime that has the upper hand; rather, due to significant defeats, the survival and existence of the regime are in jeopardy, and in desperation to compensate for its leadership failures, it has adopted tactical methods of assassination and psychological operations,” he added.

Nasrallah is the latest Hezbollah senior figure killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon in recent months. At least three other top officials of the group have been killed since July.

Ghalibaf described the Israeli regime as a “rabid dog” who has failed in its objectives in Gaza despite “placing no limitations on itself in respecting human boundaries.” He also accused the United States of being an accomplice in Israeli regime’s actions until it obliges Israel to comply with humanitarian and international frameworks.

Almost a year in, over 41,000 people have been killed as a result of the Israeli offensive in Gaza following Hamas’ incursion into Israeli territory on October 7, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The UN Security Council has adopted several resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza or proposing a ceasefire plan to bring an end to the conflict. The UN Human Rights Council in April passed a resolution calling on states to cease the sale and shipment of weapons to Israel.

Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been engaged in cross-border exchanges of fire for nearly a year. The Lebanese group initiated strikes on northern Israel on October 8.
