Iraq has taken all precautions to secure its airspace, according to a top military spokesperson, as the possibility of an Israeli attack targeting Iran and its allies in the region looms.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraqi military spokesperson Yehia Rasool on Saturday said that all necessary measures have been taken to secure the country’s airspace, amid reports of an Israeli response to attacks by pro-Iran militias.

“Iraq has the capability to monitor the airspace and track aircraft entering and exiting,” Rasool, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, told state media. “The Iraqi forces have taken all necessary measures to protect Iraqi airspace and implemented all required precautions to secure it.”

The Israeli military on Friday announced that two of its soldiers were killed, and at least 24 others wounded after an explosive drone launched from Iraq detonated in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights late Wednesday night.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed Iraqi militias, has carried out strikes against Israeli and American interests in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Israel for nearly a year in protest of the war on Gaza.

The group has intensified its attacks on Israel in recent weeks following the killing of several “Axis of Resistance” leaders in Israeli strikes.

Israeli media on Saturday reported that the military is planning a “serious and significant" response to the recent large-scale Iranian missile attack, in which nearly 200 ballistic missiles were fired toward different regions of Israel. The military is also reportedly planning a response against the militias in Iraq.

Rasool said that the Iraqi government has placed great significance on developing air defense capabilities, adding that all Iraqi borders are “well-secured” especially the border with Syria, where a large number of border guards have been stationed and thermal cameras and other security systems have been installed.

Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, told The New Region last week that “Iraq does not want to be involved in a direct war with Israel,” stressing that the country is “not ready” to enter a war.

At least three Katyusha rockets were fired toward Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Tuesday, targeting a base housing US-led coalition personnel.
