In one of the deadliest strikes on Israel since October 2023, at least four Israeli soldiers were killed as Hezbollah drones entered the country’s airspace without setting off any sirens.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - At least four Israeli soldiers were killed and dozens others wounded in a drone strike targeting a military base north of the country on Sunday evening, marking one of Hezbollah’s deadliest attacks on Israeli territory since the start of the war over a year ago.

Lebanese Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the group struck a military training site in southern Haifa’s Binyamina with “swarm drones,” and vowed to continue efforts to deter "the enemy".

The drones managed to pass through Israeli airspace without setting off any warning sirens. The Israeli military has announced a probe into the incident.

“We are required to provide better protection,” said military spokesperson Daniel Hagari, adding “We will investigate this incident, learn from it and improve.”

In addition to the four people killed, nearly 60 others were injured, including seven soldiers seriously wounded.

Hezbollah had claimed over a dozen other attacks on Israeli territory with drones and rockets earlier in the day. The Israeli military said that over 115 projectiles were launched toward the country on Sunday.

Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been engaged in frequent cross-border exchanges of fire for over a year, but tensions have been at an unprecedented high for nearly a month after a major cyberattack in Lebanon in mid-September.

Both sides have intensified their strikes in recent weeks. The Israeli army has launched a ground aggression in southern Lebanon aimed at “dismantling” the Hezbollah and its capabilities, and also killed several top “Axis of Resistance” leaders, including former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Attacks by Hezbollah and other resistance factions have largely failed in resulting in casualties.

The Israeli military announced two of its soldiers were killed and at least 24 others wounded after an explosive drone launched from Iraq detonated in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights earlier this month.
