A suspected Israeli aerial attack hit a coastal city in northwest Syria early Thursday, with varying reports regarding the target of the strikes.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - At least two people were wounded due to an Israeli strike which hit northwest Syria’s Latakia, in the early hours of Thursday. Syrian state media said that the strike targeted a military position, while a war monitor reported the attack struck an ammunition depot of Lebanese Hezbollah.

The airstrike was launched at around 2:50 am from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea targeting a Syrian army position near the entrance of the coastal city, according to state media (SANA), adding that two civilians were wounded in the attack.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the strike targeted an ammunition depot, allegedly belonging to the Iran-backed Hezbollah, but acknowledged that there is military housing of the Syrian army in the area as well.

The war monitor claimed that there is “confirmed information about human casualties,” but noted that the number and the identity of the dead have not been confirmed.

Israel frequently strikes regime-controlled areas of Syria, targeting alleged positions of Hezbollah. SANA often reports on the strikes saying they targeted military positions, while SOHR claims they targeted positions of the Hezbollah and other Iran-backed armed factions.

Hezbollah supports the government of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian army.

As part of its efforts to weaken Iran and its proxies in the region, Israel has intensified its attacks on Lebanon and Syria in recent weeks, but it rarely claims responsibility for the strikes.

At least seven people were killed as a result of an Israeli strike on Damascus earlier this month.
