Izmir protests after mayor defects to AKP, opposition slams move as ‘shameful’
After Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay, formerly of the CHP, joined the ruling AK Party, more than 1,000 protesters gathered in Izmir, a major Turkish opposition stronghold, to protest the mayor’s defection, with the main opposition Yeni Parti calling his defection a "shameful situation."
