Iraqi Minister of Health Saleh al-Hasnawi announced the imminent opening of a new center for treatment of tumors as part of a national plan to enhance specialized healthcare.

DUBAI, UAE - Iraqi Health Minister Saleh al-Hasnawi announced Thursday that the country will soon open a new center for tumor treatment, part of a broader push to expand specialized healthcare services nationwide. The minister also outlined plans to enhance cancer prevention and screening programs.

Speaking at the second Iraqi Cancer Board Conference, Hasnawi said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani's government agenda, which prioritizes expanding specialized medical centers.

New tumor treatment centers have already been opened in the provinces of Wasit and Salahaddin, as well as at al-Imamain Hospital in Baghdad. Additionally, the treatment center at Baghdad’s al-Amal Hospital has undergone upgrades, he said.

“We are on the verge of completing the fifth center in Anbar province,” Hasnawi said, adding that several more centers are under construction and are expected to open by 2025. He emphasized the ministry’s focus on both treatment and diagnosis, highlighting collaboration with the Arab Board to introduce specialized tumor treatment studies in Iraq.

Hasnawi credited the developments to coordinated efforts across multiple sectors, including the Ministry of Health, the Cancer Council, the parliament’s health and environment committe, as well as national manufacturers and companies providing cancer treatment equipment.

“Among the priorities of the ministry are cancer and tumors, but this does not mean that other priorities are not being taken care of,” he said.

In addition to expanding treatment facilities, Hasnawi announced a shift this year toward preventive health measures. The ministry is promoting awareness of self-examinations and has launched screening campaigns targeting early detection, with a particular focus on breast cancer.

“There are also other projects focused on prevention, screening, and other aspects [of cancer care],” Hasnawi said, expressing hope that these efforts will foster comprehensive development in Iraq’s healthcare system across all levels, from clinical services to education and training.
