ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iraqi parliament is set to hold a session on Monday to discuss threats from Israel and a potential attack on Iraq, according to the speaker of the legislature.
In a letter to the United Nations Security Council last week, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar urged the council to take “immediate action” to address the growing strikes by Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq on Israeli territory, calling the Iraqi government “responsible” for the attacks.
The Iraqi government rejected the Israeli complaint, labeling it a “mere excuse” to justify the Israeli regime’s plans to expand the scope of the conflict, and calling the letter “nothing more than “announcement of imminent direct attacks” against Iraq.
Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, the recently-elected Iraqi parliament speaker, said a session has been set for Monday to discuss the Israeli threats, noting that parts of the meeting could be in public with the rest in private.
“The parliament is the representative of the people and does not accept violations of Iraq’s sovereignty in any way, and we will take all the measures and steps within legal and diplomatic paths and support the government specifically in this direction,” Mashhadani told Iraqi state-run newspaper al-Sabaah on Sunday.
The speaker added that the parliament will do everything in its capacity to start dialogues with influential states to spare Iraq from any assault or harm to its security.
Monday’s session, which would mark Mashhadani’s first as speaker, has yet to be officially announced by the parliament’s media office. A session has been announced for Tuesday but it does not include this specific issue.
The Arab League Council is set to hold an emergency session in Cairo on Sunday, based on Baghdad’s request, to discuss the ongoing Israeli aggression in the region and specifically Iraq’s concerns of a potential attack.
Iraq has so far managed to shield itself from the conflict's direct effects, but continued attacks by pro-Iran Iraqi armed factions against Israeli targets have raised concerns of a potential Israeli retaliation. The government has said in multiple recent statement that it is working on preventing and pursuing any military activity outside the state's control.
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday announced it had submitted letters to several regional and international bodies regarding Israel’s reported plans to launch attacks against Iraq, urging “concentrated” efforts to stop the Israeli aggression.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella network of Iran-backed armed groups, has claimed hundreds of attacks against Israeli and American targets since October 2023 in response to the war in Gaza.
The group has intensified its attacks on Israeli territory in recent months following the killing of several “Axis of Resistance” leaders in Israeli strikes.
