ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iraqi Parliament on Monday voted to extend the term of the Board of Commissioners of Iraq’s electoral body, as Iraq is set to hold parliamentary elections in October.
“In Monday’s parliamentary session, the term of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) was extended for an additional two years,” according to a statement from the Iraqi House of Representatives’ media office.
Today’s vote came just five days after Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council decided to extend the term of the Board of Commissioners.
At the time of the extension by the Supreme Judicial Council, Imad Jameel, media officer of the IHEC told The New Region that the decision was made “upon request by the majority of the political parties.”
Iraq is set to hold parliamentary elections in October 2025.
The IHEC, for the first time, conducted the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections in October 2024.
The IHEC, a constitutional institution established under Article 102 of the Iraqi Constitution, for the first time, conducted the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections in October 2024.
The Board of Commissioners consists of nine members, including seven first-class and two second-class judges. Two of the first-class judges are selected by the Kurdistan Region’s Judicial Council, and the remaining seven judges are selected by the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council.
The parliament last extended the commission’s term by six months in July last year to allow the body to conduct the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections in October 2024. The term expired on January 5.
