ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Khor Mor Gas Field in the Sulaimani province came under a drone attack on Sunday, an official confirmed to The New Region.

An official in the field confirmed to The New Region that the LPG section of the gasfield came under a drone attack on Sunday evening.

No casualties have been reported, as of the time of this writing.

“At 07:30 pm, the Khor Mor field came under rocket attack,” Ramk Ramazan, Chamchamal mayor, told The New Region.

The LPG section of the plant has been subject to previous attacks, Ramazan said.

“A committee has been formed to follow up on the attack,” the Chamchamal mayor detailed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the drone attack.

The gas field has, on multiple occasions, come under drone attacks in the past, the last of which occurred in late April 2024. Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups have claimed responsibility for the majority of the attacks. It is commonly believed that the attacks are a bid to limit the Kurdistan Region’s gas production abilities, and in turn obliging Baghdad to continue importing energy from Tehran.

Khor Mor field currently produces 489 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas, an Emirati giant that operates the field.

Today’s attack comes as the Iraqi Parliament a few hours ago voted on amending the Iraqi federal budget law, a major move that will pave the way for the resumption of the Kurdistan Region’s oil export to the international market, almost two years after they were halted.

The Khor Mor gas field lies between the cities of Kirkuk and Sulaimani, in a region administered by Kurdish authorities.
