ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Emirati giant Dana Gas announced on Monday that the drone attack on the Khor Mor Gas Field did not cause “injuries to people” and had “no impact on production facilities,” and that production operations continue as normal.
The Khor Mor Gas Field in the Sulaimani province, operated by Dana Gas, came under a drone attack on Sunday evening. An official in the field confirmed to The New Region that the LPG section of the gasfield was the target.
“Dana Gas (PJSC) informs the market that on the evening of 2 February 2025, a drone targeted the vicinity of the Khor Mor gas field. There were no injuries to people and no impact on production facilities,” Dana Gas said in a statement on Monday.
“Production operations continued as normal under the comprehensive security measures in place to ensure the safety of all personnel and assets,” Dana Gas added, detailing that they would remain “in close coordination with all relevant authorities and security forces, who are monitoring the situation closely, to ensure continuing safe operations.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the drone attack.
The gas field has, on multiple occasions, come under drone attacks in the past, the last of which occurred in late April 2024. Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups have claimed responsibility for the majority of the attacks. It is commonly believed that the attacks are a bid to limit the Kurdistan Region’s gas production abilities, and in turn obliging Baghdad to continue importing energy from Tehran.
Khor Mor field currently produces 489 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas, an Emirati giant that operates the field.
Sunday’s attack comes as the Iraqi Parliament voted on amending the Iraqi federal budget law on the same day, a major move that will pave the way for the resumption of the Kurdistan Region’s oil export to the international market, almost two years after they were halted.
The Khor Mor gas field lies between the cities of Kirkuk and Sulaimani, in a region administered by Kurdish authorities.
“Dana Gas, Pearl Petroleum and the partners remain committed to the safe and reliable operation of the Khor Mor gas facility, safeguarding the interests of its stakeholders and the people of the KRI and all of Iraq,” Dana Gas stated.
