In a renewed appeal for peace in the Middle East, Pope Francis expresses his "closeness and solidarity" with the victims of a deadly Iranian missile strikes on Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, urging "everyone to avoid any step likely to increase tensions." Iraq recalled its ambassador to Tehran over the incident, challenging Iran's claim that the strikes targeted Israel's intelligence services in response to recent Israeli assassinations of Iranian and pro-Iranian commanders.
