Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani marked International Women’s Day by reaffirming his government’s commitment to advancing women's rights and empowerment.

DUBAI, UAE - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Saturday extended congratulations to Iraqi women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, recognizing their vital role in nation-building and societal progress.

In an official statement, Sudani highlighted his government’s commitment to advancing women's rights through legislative reforms, leadership opportunities, and strategic initiatives aimed at fostering gender equality.

“Our government has given special priority to women's affairs by actively adopting and implementing legislation that safeguards their rights,” he said. “We have worked to enhance their rightful status by ensuring their participation in key responsibilities and leadership positions.”

Sudani emphasized Iraq’s efforts to integrate women into government programs, tackle unemployment and illiteracy among women, and support female pioneers in sports, culture, science, and the arts.

As part of these efforts, the Iraqi government has launched the National Strategy for Iraqi Women (2023-2030) and the Second Updated National Strategy to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls (2023-2030). The administration also established the Supreme Council for Women to create more opportunities for women’s empowerment, according to the Iraqi premier’s statement

To mark the National Day of Iraqi Women, observed annually on March 3, Sudani announced five major development programs, including the Third National Plan for Women, Peace, and Security (2025-2030) and the National Data Platform for Women, which provides real-time information on women’s issues.

He also introduced the National Network of Women Peace Mediators, the Women, Peace, and Security Institute, and the “Pioneers of Change” leadership program, which aims to develop women's leadership skills.

“With these initiatives, we have achieved unprecedented milestones for Iraqi women, both in legislation and direct support mechanisms, ensuring their continued empowerment and active participation in shaping Iraq's future,” Sudani said.
