ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iraqi interior ministry on Wednesday warned that any resident publishing content which offends the social values of the country would be deported, as authorities continue to detain Syrian refugees accused of inciting violence in the neighboring country.
The Iraqi defense ministry’s intelligence and security directorate announced on Wednesday the arrest of an individual accused of “promoting and inciting violence and murder in Syria” on social media, without mentioning the nationality of the suspect.
At least three Syrian refugees have been arrested by Iraqi authorities over the past week on charges of supporting Syrian “extremist organizations,” coinciding with armed clashes in Syria’s coastal areas between loyalists to deposed president Bashar al-Assad and security forces of the new Damascus administration.
The suspects were reportedly arrested for posting content in support of the new authorities’ military operations and violent crackdown against those suspected of siding with the insurgents.
"Any resident who publishes information offensive to the values of our Iraqi society will be deported," said Iraqi interior ministry spokesperson Miqdad Miri on Wednesday, noting that they have recorded several cases of content inciting sectarian violence.
Miri described Iraq as “a country of generosity and hospitality” which respects all visitors and residents, but stressed that publishing such content is “completely rejected” as it violates Iraqi laws and traditions.
"Those present on Iraqi soil must respect the law, values, customs, and traditions on which our dear people were raised," said the spokesperson, warning that those who try to create sedition that they “will be met with a strong response in accordance with the law.”
A video by an Iraqi Shiite militia calling itself the “Ya Ali Popular Formations” circulated on social media on Tuesday, depicting masked members of the group harassing Syrian refugees working in a bakery in Iraq and physically assaulting them.
The Syrian foreign ministry condemned the “violations” committed against Syrian refugees in Iraq, calling on the Iraqi government to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Wednesday ordered the formation of "a specialized security team to prosecute those who commit these illegal acts," according to a statement from his office.
