Bilateral ties, the liquification of PKK and affiliated groups, regional concerns, and the situation in Syria are set to be discussed during Fidan's visit

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to leave for the US on an official visit on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments in Syria, including the dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its affiliated groups, according to Anadolu Agency.

Fidan is set to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other American officials during his two-day visit to Washington.

“During the meeting, it will be emphasized that cooperation should be strengthened in the fight against terrorist organizations… especially in the liquidation of PKK/YPG elements under the umbrella of the ‘SDF’,” Anadolu wrote.

The Turkish top diplomat’s visit to Washington comes amid significant steps taken in the peace talks between Ankara and PKK. In late February, jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan called on the party to disarm and dissolve, marking a potential turning point in efforts to end the four-decade-long conflict.

Fidan is set to discuss several other topics with the officials, including “regional issues that concern Turkey, and to emphasize Turkey's support for the stability and integrity of Syria,” according to the Turkish state media.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is the Kurdish de facto army in northeastern Syria that controls nearly a quarter of the country.

Turkey, which currently fights Kurdish-led forces in Syria along with armed groups that they back, considers the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which is the backbone of the SDF, as inextricably linked to the PKK. The YPG, however, insists that they merely subscribe to a similar ideology.

On March 10, SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement with Syria's Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa to officially integrate the Kurdish-led forces and all other institutions in northeast Syria into the Syrian state institutions.

Fidan’s visit comes amid talks of unity among Kurdish factions in Syria. Northeast Syria’s opposition coalition the Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) and the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) earlier in March held “positive” talks on forming a united Kurdish front in Damascus in the presence of Abdi and US envoy Scott Bolz.
