ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – An explosive-laden drone targeted a Peshmerga base in Duhok province’s Deraluk subdistrict on Monday, injuring at least three personnel. A government official told The New Region that the UAV was launched by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The attack occurred at around 4:00 PM. Masoud Tahir, head of Amedi district’s health department, told The New Region that at least three Peshmerga fighters were hospitalized in the attack.
A well-informed source within the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) told The New Region that the drone attack was carried out by the PKK.
Designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara, the PKK uses mountainous areas of the Kurdistan Region as shelter and often engages in direct armed conflict with Turkey. The group and its proxies have also engaged in clashes with the Peshmerga and Iraqi armed forces in the past.
The attack comes amid peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK since October. In late February, PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan called on the group to disarm and transition to a dialogue-based discourse with Turkey as opposed to military struggle.
The negotiations aim to bring to an end the conflict between the two sides that has spanned decades and claimed tens of thousands of lives.
