ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Region’s Board of Investment said Friday that a Turkish company will build the biggest factory across Iraq to recycle and reuse paper and cardboard in Erbil.
“A Turkish company through Turkey’s consulate has submitted a proposal to the Board of Investment to build a paper recycling factory, the first of its kind across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” Bargasht Akraiy, spokesperson of the Kurdistan Region’s Board of Investment, told The New Region.
Akraiy added that the factory is currently in the final stage of establishment and has completed all administrative and legal procedures.
The ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Region has prioritized efforts to provide all facilities for the establishment of environment-friendly projects in the Kurdistan Region.
The giant project will help create jobs and clean the environment from waste paper.
It is also designed to meet domestic needs at first, and then export to other parts of Iraq and beyond, the official detailed.
In addition to the Kurdistan Region, Iraq also aims to recycle waste into energy and reuse materials through major projects.
In February, the mayorality of Baghdad announced the launch of a waste-to-energy project within the next six months that will be able to generate 45 megawatts of electricity for every 3,000 tons of waste.
According to the Ministry of Environment, each Iraqi individual disposes of around one kilogram of waste per day.
A mid-2022 report by the United Nations Environment Program outlined that Iraq trailed only Bahrain in the Central Asia region regarding food waste.
The report revealed that an average Iraqi discards around 120 kilograms of food per year, contributing to an annual food waste tally of approximately five million tons in the country.
According to data from the Central Statistical Organization for the Environmental Services Sector in 2021, the total annual collection of regular waste, which includes food waste, stood at 11.2 million tons.
