A 5,000-seat Roman theater and a musical fountain are key components of the Rashkin Park development project, which seeks to bring an injection of pleasant greenery and leisure space to the Kurdistan Region's capital, with construction set to finish this year.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A 5,000-seat Roman theater and the largest fountain in Iraq will be built in the capital city of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region.

The two projects are located inside Rashkin Park, which is currently under construction.

The Rashkin Park development project, including the fountain and the theater, will be at a cost of 15 billion dinars on a 120,000-square-meter plot of land near the 120-meter ring road in the western part of the Kurdish capital.

The project will become one of the "largest and greenest projects across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” Hiwa Sulaiman, the supervising engineer of Rashkin Park, told The New Region on Wednesday.

“Inside Rashkin Park, the largest musical fountain on a 6,500 square meter area will be built,” Sulaiman said. “The fountain can take up to 3,600 cubic meters of water. It shoots water up to 25 meters into the air, accompanied by a range of music.”

He added that the fountain will be built at a cost of three billion dinars.

"Inside the project will also be a Roman theater. It will be built on an 8,000-square-meter site,” the engineer said, detailing that one billion dinars will be expended for the construction of the 5,000-seat theater, the first of its kind in Erbil.

Rashkin Park will be designed using modern construction materials, with the furniture, flowers, trees, and shrubs for the park being brought from Spain and Italy, the supervising engineer said.

Construction began in May 2024 and is expected to finish later this year in accordance with the project's initial 18 month deadline.

More than 80 workers and engineers are working on the project daily.
