ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Region on Sunday recorded a new case of hemorrhagic fever in Erbil, marking Erbil’s second and the Region’s third case since the beginning of the outbreak.
"Another case of hemorrhagic fever has been recorded, it is a woman who resides in Mosul province's al-Ba'aj. She is a 27 years old housewife," the Kurdistan Region's health ministry told The New Region on Sunday.
"After she notices her symptoms, she heads to Erbil to receive treatment," the ministry detailed, adding that she has been put under intensive care at the hospital and is receiving treatment.
Over 70 hemorrhagic cases have been recorded across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, including eight deaths, with Dhi Qar province bearing the brunt of the fatal disease across Iraq with 25 confirmed cases, representing more than 34 percent of the total number of cases recorded to date this year.
Sunday’s case however marks the third case in the Kurdistan Region, after two cases were previously recorded, one in Duhok and the other in Koya.
“The Duhok patient died last week,” the ministry said, while the case in Koya responded well to treatment and was successfully cured.
Hemorrhagic fever is an infectious viral disease often transmitted from animals to humans, with symptoms that can range from mild to severe and potentially life-threatening. Those working closely with animals face an elevated risk of infection.
The Kurdistan Region’s first fatality due to the fever, the Duhok case, was recorded on May 10. The deceased was a 45-year-old woman from Duhok’s Amedi district.
