Six US-supported operations across Iraq and Syria saw two ISIS operatives killed, weapons seized, and a leader captured.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday that it had supported six operations targeting the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria between May 21 and 27.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM noted that five of the operations in question took place in Iraq, spread across Salah al-Din, Kirkuk, and Fallujah, with the remaining operation being effected by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near Deir-ez-Zor in eastern Syria.

The statement noted that raids resulted in “two ISIS operatives killed, two detained, including an ISIS leader, and the recovery of multiple weapons.”

Iraqi forces, supported by the US, participated in missions entailing the “clearance and destruction of multiple locations, confiscation of small arms weapons and munitions, [and] recovery of material for further exploitation,” with the statement emphasizing that “the operations served to disrupt and degrade ISIS' ability to reconstitute, plan, organize, and conduct attacks against civilians and U.S. and partner forces in the region.”

CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla said that "operations like these underscore the commitment of USCENTCOM, along with our allies and partners, to the enduring defeat of ISIS in the region."

Despite being territorially defeated in 2017, ISIS militants continue to pose a security threat in Iraq through sporadic hit-and-run operations and attacks on remote areas. Iraqi forces have intensified their efforts to eliminate these remnants.

Cooperation between Iraq’s security services and US military authorities remains intimate, with extensive intelligence sharing and joint operations planning occurring on a routine basis.

Iraqi security forces arrested over 500 terror suspects in 2024, according to data from the Iraqi National Security Service.
