ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Deputy Chief of Staff at the US Embassy in Baghdad Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau on Tuesday reaffirmed her country’s “commitment” to the security and stability of Iraq amid regional escalations between Iran and Israel.

In a meeting on Wednesday with the Iraqi foreign ministry’s Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Mohammed Hussein Mohammed Bahr Al-Uloom, Trudeau affirmed “her country's commitment to supporting efforts to maintain Iraq's security and stability,” while reiterating that “the United States has not participated in any military operations,” Iraqi state media said, citing a statement by the foreign ministry.

“Washington is making strenuous efforts to halt military operations and escalation in the region, and is working to push all parties toward calm and prioritizing diplomatic solutions,” the Iraqi News Agency (INA) cited the statement as quoting the US diplomat, adding that the pair stressed the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and ensure that the escalation does not turn into a full-scale regional conflict.

Tensions have escalated between Iran and Israel over the past six days, after Israel launched a large-scale offensive early Friday, targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities across the country and killing over 200 people, including dozens of high-profile military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Iran has responded to the strikes, firing hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli territories.

The US has denied any involvement in the attack, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing Israel’s offensive as a “unilateral action” and warning Iran against harming the US’s interests in the region or retaliating against them.

The narrative, however, seems to be shifting in recent times, with US President Donald Trump reportedly growing “increasingly warm” to the idea of using US military assets to strike Iranian nuclear facilities and shifting away from pursuing a diplomatic solution, according to a CNN report from Tuesday.

Israel’s reported usage of Iraqi airspace to reach Iranian territory to carry out its attacks has been strongly rejected by several Iraqi official bodies, prompting Baghdad to file a complaint to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) accusing Israel of violating Iraqi airspace during the extensive aerial bombardment Tel Aviv orchestrated against Iran.

Al-Uloom for his part, reaffirmed Iraq’s “condemnation” of the Israeli attacks, describing them as “a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter,” while decrying Israel’s “violation of Iraq's sovereignty and the use of its airspace to carry out this attack.”

The Iraqi official also voiced concern over “a direct threat to public safety and the environment in the region” associated with bombing nuclear facilities, calling the move “a flagrant violation of international law.”

On a different note, AlUloom noted that the renewed US security alert for Iraq is “not consistent with the reality and improved security conditions and the efforts made by the Iraqi government in this regard,” according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), referring to a recent renewal of the US’ travel advisory for Iraq, maintaining the country’s status at a Level 4, which discourages visiting the country “for any reason.”
