ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran’s judiciary on Monday said it hanged a man found guilty of spying for Israel, as air war between the two countries entered its 11th day.
“Mohammed Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh was hanged this morning for intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime,” the judiciary said in a statement.
Shayesteh was alleged to have had links to Israel’s Mossad agency and collaboration with Iran International, a London-based TV channel Iran accuses of having links to Israel.
Iran frequently detains dual and foreign nationals on charges of espionage for foreign governments. Human rights watchdogs have accused Tehran of engaging in “hostage diplomacy” and using the prisoners as bargaining chips with its rivals.
Iranian authorities on Sunday vowed to speed up such cases.
The same day, the judiciary announced the execution of Majid Mosayebi, who was also convicted of being an agent for Mossad.
Mosayebi was hanged “after going through the full process of criminal procedures and after his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online said.
Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei told state television that the body will handle “security-related cases, especially those involving support for the usurping regime [Israel]...more swiftly."
