ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq’s oil ministry announced Sunday that it had drilled and rehabilitated more than 100 oil wells during the first half of 2025.

The Iraqi Drilling Company drilled 27 new wells and rehabilitated 86 existing ones during the first six months of this year, according to a statement by the Ministry of Oil.

The process is part of the ministry’s plans to “increase production rates and enhance the efficiency of oil fields,” the statement reads.

Head of Iraq’s Drilling Company Hassan Mohammed said they are moving forward with additional projects with a vision aimed at “expanding the scope of drilling and rehabilitating operations, contributing to supporting the national economy and keeping pace with the aspirations of the energy sector in Iraq.”

Oil remains Iraq’s main source of revenue.

Iraq has 145 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, according to the World Bank.

Iraq’s current production capacity is around four million barrels per day, under an agreement with OPEC+, with nearly 700,000 barrels used domestically.

The Iraqi oil ministry announced plans in March to increase oil production to six million barrels per day between 2028 and 2029.

Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Region’s oil, which is also expected to resume soon, is set to add nearly 200,000 barrels per day during the initial phase of its restart and gradually increase to reach 400,000 barrels per day.
