ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – An unidentified drone targeted a vehicle carrying two individuals allegedly affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Sulaimani’s Penjwen district on Saturday, killing one of the passengers.
The attack occurred in the Shewagwezan village, near the border with Iran, on Saturday morning, according to Ziyad Abdullah, mayor of Garmk subdistrict.
The mayor told The New Region that one of the passengers was killed and the other was severely injured. He stressed that the identity of both the targeted and the assailant party remain unclear.
The Community Peacemaker Team (CPT), a human rights watchdog monitoring Turkey's operations in the Kurdistan Region, claimed that the attack targeted members of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), a PKK-aligned Kurdish-Iranian opposition armed group.
“A Turkish drone attacked a Toyota Hilux vehicle of PJAK guerrilla… killing one guerrilla and seriously wounding another,” read a statement by CPT member Kamaran Osman.
“As a result of the attack, the fields and gardens of the villagers were burned. The fire was brought under control three hours after the incident,” he added.
The attack comes over a week after 30 PKK fighters, including four commanders, destroyed and burned their weapons near Jasana Cave, in Sulaimani province’s Dukan district, in a symbolic ceremony marking the start of the group’s self-disarmament.
Cast out of Turkey, the PKK have sought refuge in the mountainous areas of the Kurdistan Region for decades, continuing their armed struggle against the Turkish state from there.
In March, the PKK claimed responsibility for shooting down a drone of the Bayraktar Akinci type in Sulaimani's Dukan district that they said belonged to Turkey. Ankara swiftly denied the allegations.
At least one person was killed and two others were injured after a suspected Turkish drone targeted an alleged meeting base of the PKK at the Makhmour Camp, some 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil.
Turkey has carried out at least a dozen attacks in the Kurdistan Region since the PKK began its disarmament last week, according to Osman.
