ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Shareholders in the Chavi Land amusement park in Sulaimani on Wednesday threatened to take businessman turned opposition leader Shaswar Abdulwahid to the federal court, citing no returns on their investments.
Chavi Land shareholders threatened to resort to the Federal Supreme Court if their complaints continue to go unanswered, a shareholder told The New Region on Wednesday.
Around 8,000 shareholders in the Chavi Land project complained of having not made any financial profit, instead suffering financial losses, from purchasing shares of the amusement park 11 years earlier.
Ako Mohammed Reza, one of the shareholders, told The New Region that they demand an explanation from Chavi Land’s Board of Directors as to why the shareholders have not made profit.
“We have filed several complaints in court but to no avail and we have to resort to the Federal Court to get our rights back,” he said.
He further claimed that after purchasing 20 million dinars worth of shares, he was only given 250,000 dinars by the project.
“We will hand you a Chavi Land game card, you can partake in the games,” he claimed to have been told by the project.
The Chavi Land project was founded by Abdulwahid, the leader of the New Generation movement, who was arrested on Tuesday night by security forces over a court arrest warrant for making threats.
His arrest has reignited years long demands by shareholders of one of his biggest projects.
For years, the shareholders have asked for returns on their investment, claiming they had been scammed, but the nature of the contracts and the investment process are not clear to The New Region.
