In September 2024, the CMC announced that they have reached a settlement over Korek’s unpaid financial obligations and debts. Despite this, Korek’s external telecommunications was not restored.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Korek Telecom on Thursday denied reports suggesting it was set to resume telecommunications with other carriers at midnight, stating that they continue negotiations with the Iraqi regulator to resolve their issues.

In November 2023, Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC) blocked all incoming and outgoing communications between Korek and other carriers, citing Korek’s failure to pay its financial obligations.

A source close to Korek told The New Region on Thursday that the carrier’s external telecommunications was set to resume later in the evening “barring any unexpected developments.”

A statement attributed to Korek Telecom’s administrative board denied the rumors.

“We are still in ongoing negotiations with the CMC, but we have nothing official yet,” read the statement, describing the reports as “untrue” and stating that the alleged source is “not really aware of the details.”

“We hope to resolve this issue for our subscribers as soon as possible,” the statement added.

In September 2024, the CMC announced that they have reached a settlement over Korek’s unpaid financial obligations and debts. Despite this, Korek’s external telecommunications was not restored.

In February, the Iraqi regulator said it had decided to immediately shut down Korek Telecom’s internet services, in a “punitive action” against the carrier over its failure to pay its debts.

Korek slammed the CMC’s decision to shut down its internet services as an “unprecedented” and “blatant violation of the law,” claiming that the move reflects “political pressure aimed at eliminating our company in favor of other entities.”

This article was initially titled "Korek to resume external telecommunications: Source," but was later updated after the carrier's statement
