ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Two vehicles were trapped under rubble in Iraq’s Karbala after a bridge collapsed on Saturday, with rescue attempts underway to save the passengers in the vehicles.

Footage began circulating on social media of the al-Utaishi bridge in Karbala’s Hussainiya area, which was reportedly under construction, collapsing on Saturday evening, leaving at least two vehicles trapped under rubble in the aftermath of the incident, with civil defense forces toiling to save the passengers in the cars.

Karbala Governor Nassif Jassim al-Khattabi personally supervised the rescue efforts, according to a statement from his office, noting that two cars that were trapped under the debris.

The passengers of one vehicle were rescued successfully, with efforts still underway to save those in the second vehicle.

The incident marks the second bridge infrastructure fault in Iraq in just over three months. Footage of Baghdad’s Zafaraniyah overpass went viral across social media in early June, showing copious amounts of water leaking from the sides of the overpass.

The bridge collapse comes just weeks after the Arbaeen Shiite pilgrimage ceremony, commemorating the death of Imam Hussein, which sees millions of Shiite Muslims from around the world pour into Karbala for religious purposes. The Arabaeen commemorations are held 40 days following the anniversary of Ashura—the day Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was killed in the deserts of Karbala in the seventh century.
