Two people were killed and at least seven others injured when an under-construction overpass collapsed at the entrance to the Iraqi city of Karbala on Saturday evening.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Iraqi Parliament on Tuesday issued a directive to form a specialized committee tasked with investigating the recent bridge collapse in Karbala province in which two people were killed.

An under-construction bridge in Karbala’s al-Husayniyah area collapsed on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of at least two individuals and injuring seven others.

An Iraqi parliament order was issued on Tuesday, signed by SpeakerMahmoud Al-Mashhadani, demanding the formation of a committee to look into the incident.

The document calls for the formation of a “temporary parliamentary committee,” made up of five members. The committee is required to submit its report within five days.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Saturday ordered an investigation into the Karbala bridge collapse, directing relevant authorities to determine the causes of the incident and identify those responsible.

His office said that the premier was “closely following the tragic incident” and demanded “accountability for those at fault.”

Karbala Provincial Council chief Qasim al-Yasari told state media on Sunday that the collapse of the bridge was due to “negligence” and “flawed implementation” of the project, adding that the council will carry out “an urgent investigation with the implementing firm.”

The collapse of the bridge has reignited concerns about corruption, poor oversight, and the quality of Iraq’s infrastructure. While rescue crews continued clearing debris on Sunday, politicians and citizens alike were left demanding accountability for yet another construction disaster.
