ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq’s electoral body on Thursday fined several senior figures, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and former premier Nouri al-Maliki, two million dinars for violating election campaign regulations.
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) decided to “impose a financial fine for each violation in the amount of two million dollars against the candidates whose names are included in list A,” the body said in a statement.
The list of violators also includes Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbasi, Higher Education Minister Naeem al-Aboudi, and Deputy Parliament Speaker Muhsin al-Mandalawi, alongside Sudani and Maliki.
They will be instructed to remove their infractions, “and in the event of non-removal, the fine will be doubled,” according to IHEC.
Prime Minister Sudani is heading his own coalition for the upcoming parliamentary vote - the Reconstruction and Development Alliance - while Maliki remains as the leader of the State of Law Coalition.
Iraq is set to hold parliamentary elections on November 11.
The vote will be held without any amendments to Iraq’s parliamentary election law - the Sainte-Laguë system - which favors better-funded, established parties over independent candidates and smaller parties.
