ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday launched the sixth annual HITEX tech fair Erbil, an exhibition that brings together experts to discuss technological advancements and showcase local and foreign businesses.
Taking place at Erbil International Fair, the annual exhibition began on Tuesday morning and is set to continue for four days.
Speaking to reporters at the exhibition, the Kurdish premier said that he is happy to witness home-grown tech initiatives and experts in the Kurdistan Region, adding that Kurdish youth have been “able to both innovate and participate in the technological advancement that now exists across the world.”
“I have a lot of hope for a better future of the Kurdistan Region,” said Barzani, reiterating the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) support for small businesses.
The event contains panels, seminars, and discussions around three main topics: Artificial intelligence and technology, digital economy, and social media content. More than 40 experts from around the world are set to attend and speak at the exhibition.
According to information obtained by The New Region, more than 11,000 individuals have registered to attend this year’s HITEX.
Rava Ardalan, a member of the HITEX organizing team, told The New Region that “122 companies and technology sectors from 15 countries are participating in the exhibition. Nearly 25 percent are foreign, and 10 percent are from Iraqi cities, while 60 percent are from the cities of Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok.”
“Additionally, 20 small business owners are participating, with more than seven businesses receiving financial support from international organizations,” Ardalan added.
An amount of 145 million Iraqi dinars has been allocated to 20 local initiatives shortlisted from approximately 100 businesses submitted through HITEX’s small business program.
Regarded as the sixth largest technology festival across the Middle East and the largest in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, HITEX is a gateway for foreign and global companies to connect with the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi market.
