ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Unidentified gunmen late Tuesday opened fire on a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) office in Sulaimani, a party official said. The attack caused no injuries.

“A vehicle traveling at high speed passed by the main road in front of the Arbat district branch and fired shots toward the branch. The branch’s guards responded to the shots, and the vehicle fled the scene,” Jawhar Awakalayi, a KDP official in Sulaimani, told The New Region.

Security forces promptly arrived on the scene and launched an investigation into the attack, according to the official.

No injuries were reported in the attack.

The attack comes ahead of Iraq’s federal parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 11.

Campaigning for the vote began on Friday for more than 7,750 candidates vying for the legislature’s 329 seats, which are distributed across the country’s provinces under a proportional representation system.

Iraq last held parliamentary elections in October 2021. That vote saw a record low turnout amid widespread public frustration.

It also comes as the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) ramp up efforts to form the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), nearly a year after regional elections were held.

During that vote, the KDP emerged victorious with 39 out of 100 seats, and the PUK came second with 23.
