Razzaq Obeid, director of Iraq’s Tammuz Organization for Social Development, told The New Region that there has been an 80 percent rise in electoral activity overnight as campaigning for Iraq's upcoming elections picks up steam.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq’s Tammuz Organization for Social Development on Saturday revealed that campaigning and mobilization for the upcoming parliamentary elections have spiked dramatically and are expected to continue to rise in the coming days.

The organization’s monitoring teams Friday night reported “an unprecedented escalation in the volume of electoral campaigns, manifested in replacing torn advertisements, intensifying community meetings, and organizing electoral conferences that bring candidates together with citizens,” Razzaq Obeid, director of the organization’s regional center, told The New Region.

The director indicated that an estimated 80 percent rise in activity was recorded in comparison to the previous weeks.

He added that the upcoming days will witness “more campaign momentum” leading up to the electoral silence period that takes place one day before the vote.

Obeid noted a 'qualitative shift' in the nature of electoral campaigning, where the focus on parties and candidates is intensified on field visits and the use of social media platforms to directly connect to voters, rather than just traditional banners.

The electoral silence period is slated for November 8 at 7 am, following which electoral campaigns must be immediately and completely halted.

Special voting is scheduled to take place a day after the silence period, whereby special forces and members of security services will cast their votes.

The rest of Iraqi citizens are set to cast their ballots on November 11. Iraq's electoral body announced Saturday that preliminary results of the country's parliamentary elections will be released 24 hours after the close of voting.

Campaigning for the federal parliamentary elections began in early October, with over 7,750 candidates competing for the 329 seats allocated across the provinces under a proportional representation system.
