ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - President Masoud Barzani’s office on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on the key Khor Mor gas field, calling for action as repeated attacks and condemnations have not led to measures against the perpetrators

The Khor Mor gas field was targeted by drones twice this week, including an attack on Wednesday which caused significant damage as the drones struck the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage, cutting up to 80 percent of the Kurdistan Region’s electricity.

“Despite the fact that such illegal attacks on the Region have been condemned many times before, it has only been condemnation, and no measures have been taken against the perpetrators, and these attacks have been repeated,” read a statement from the Barzani Headquarters, calling the incident a “terrorist” attack on all citizens in Iraq.

“The time has come for serious and practical steps to be taken against these transgressions and illegal attacks, to put an end to them, and for the perpetrators to be punished,” the statement stressed.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani launched a probe into the attacks on Thursday, with support from the US-led international coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) - the first time the coalition gets involved in addressing such an attack.

The Khor Mor field is the main producer of the Kurdistan Region’s electricity, with natural gas reserves of around 1.8 trillion cubic feet. It is operated by Dana Gas, which, alongside affiliate Crescent Petroleum, agreed to a deal with the KRG in 2007 to develop the Region’s gas capacities.

On Monday, two drones were shot down over the field by security forces. The Kurdistan Region’s oil and energy infrastructure also came under repeated attacks in late June and July.
