ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iraq’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition, the main victor of the recent elections, on Tuesday reiterated support for its leader Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani to serve a second term as the country’s Prime Minister.
The leading coalition affirmed “its commitment to its candidate for Prime Minister, Mr. Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani,” in a statement following a regular party meeting.
The party cited Sudani’s “successful record in leading the executive branch,” and the fact that the coalition scored the largest number of seats among the Coordination Framework lists in the recent parliamentary elections.
Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition emerged as the main party in the country in the November elections after securing 46 seats.
The Coordination Framework, Iraq’s ruling Shiite faction, held a meeting on Monday at the office of Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, during which Sudani provided the attendees with “a comprehensive presentation… on developments in the security and political situation in the country.”
“The Coordination Framework affirmed its commitment to resolving national obligations within the constitutional deadlines, in cooperation with its partners in the political process,” read a statement from the faction.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Dawa Party, another component of the Coordination Framework, has fielded Maliki as its candidate for Iraq’s next prime minister.
Maliki’s State of Law Coalition won 29 seats in the recent elections, placing third.
A source within the Framework previously told The New Region that ten candidates are in the running for the premiership, including names like Sudani, former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri, and Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani.
The source noted that the Framework intends to select three candidates to present them to other political forces for feedback before a final nominee is agreed upon and consensus is reached.
