“I have instructed the relevant ministries and local administration to go to the aid of the affected people and provide any necessary assistance and support,” Prime Minister Barzani said in a statement.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday directed authorities to provide support after powerful flash floods across the Region, offering his condolences to the victims after two lost their lives in Sulaimani province.

Powerful flash floods struck the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, most heavily affecting Sulaimani’s Chamchamal district and causing a total blackout as authorities scrambled to assist the citizens.

“I have instructed the relevant ministries and local administration to go to the aid of the affected people and provide any necessary assistance and support,” Prime Minister Barzani said in a statement.

Floods raged through the streets of Chamchamal, Tainal, Takia, and Bazian, sweeping away dozens of cars and causing heavy material damage.

The flood killed two and injured at least 12 others in Chamchamal, with one in critical condition and another missing, district mayor Ramak Ramazan told The New Region. It hit tens of cars, several neighborhoods, shops, and homes.

“Unfortunately, due to flash floods, two citizens in the town of Shorsh in Chamchamal district have lost their lives, and material damage has occurred to citizens' homes, schools, and government offices,” the premier lamented.

“I express my deep condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and share in their grief. I also wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Barzani added.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also extended his support and condolences.

“I express my deep condolences and sympathy to the families and relatives of the victims, and I share in their sorrow and grief,” the Kurdistan Region’s president said, adding, “The relevant authorities have been instructed to go to the aid of the affected people and make every effort to protect the lives and property of citizens and provide the necessary assistance.”

Footage circulating online showed neighborhoods submerged in muddy floodwater, with cars and other personal property being swept away. Several roads leading to Chamchamal have also been blocked by the rain.
