ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced Friday that oil production has been halted at the Sarsang field in Duhok following the previous night's drone strikes, calling on Baghdad to prevent attacks on the Region's critical infrastructure.
The field, which is operated by the US-based HKN Energy, was targeted by two drones late Thursday night, resulting in a blaze breaking out on the site.
The KRG's Ministry of Natural Resources said in a statement that it condemns the attack on "the economic infrastructure and wealth of the people of the Kurdistan Region" and urges the Iraqi federal government to "prevent attacks on civilians in the Kurdistan Region, economic infrastructure, and the oil and gas sector."
The strikes were carried out by an "outlaw group in Iraq," according to the statement.
The Guardians of Blood, a subsidiary outfit of the pro-Iran Islamic Resistance in Iraq, said Friday that its forces launched a drone attack on a "vital target" in Duhok, with other aligned factions having repeatedly launched strikes in the Kurdistan Region following last week's US-Israeli military offensive against Iran.
The targeting of energy infrastructure mirrors a spate of attacks that took place following the 2025 12-Day War between the US, Iran, and Israel, which saw oil and gas sites being repeatedly attacked by drones.
The US Consulate General in Erbil and the American military presence at Erbil International Airport have also been targeting by both the Iranian military and Iran-affiliated Iraqi Shiite factions, leading Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to decry the actions of what he called "outlaw and terrorist parties."
“I thank the people of Kurdistan for their patience, and I assure you we will do everything to ensure our people are safe, our Kurdistan is protected, and we are kept away from all wars and chaos,” said the Kurdish premier, expressing hopes for a swift end to the hostilities and a return of stability to the region.
HKN Energy is a major oil player in the Kurdistan Region, with Prime Minister Barzani in May 2025 presiding over the signing of two major agreements in the energy sector between the KRG’s natural resources ministry and HKN Energy and WesternZagros in Washington, DC. The deals hold a combined value of $110 billion and aim to boost the Kurdistan Region’s energy sector.
