ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Aerial attacks on two bases belonging to Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) on Saturday killed at least one member and injured three others.
The attacks targeted the 33rd Regiment of the PMF in the Qayyarah town, south of Mosul, as well as the PMF's 40th Brigade, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
Kataib al-Imam Ali, a pro-Iran Iraqi armed faction, makes up the PMF's 40th Brigade.
"These brutal attacks resulted in the martyrdom of a fighter from the Popular Mobilization Forces and the injury of three others, in addition to material losses, according to preliminary information," the command's Security Media Cell said, adding that the perpetrators of the attacks are unidentified as of writing this article.
US and Israel launched a full-fledged war against Iran last week, leading to a retaliatory campaign by Iran and its proxies which has targeted US interests across the Middle East.
Iraq has been targeted by both sides of the conflict, with the US and Israel striking pro-Iran militias in southern and central Iraq while Iran and its proxies have targeted US facilities and bases both in federal Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
The groups targeted the Kurdistan Region's Erbil and Sulaimani on Saturday in a renewed round of attacks, allegedly targeting Erbil International Airport, and the Peshmerga's Unit 70 base in Sulaimani, according to footage submitted to The New Region.
The attacks led to no casualties and the projectiles were intercepted.
