The Sulaimani-based Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) later reported that six drones had struck the city: Four targeting the Unit 70 base, and two targeting an area near the UN office and the Turkish consulate.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A series of drone strikes targeted the Kurdistan Region overnight, killing at least one in Erbil and another in Sulaimani.

On late Saturday, air defense systems were activated over Erbil to counter dozens of incoming projectiles targeting US interests in the Kurdish capital.

Although most of the drones were successfully intercepted, the attacks resulted in the death of one member of the internal security forces (Asayish) and the injury of another at Erbil International Airport, Governor Omed Khoshnaw told The New Region.

Minutes before midnight drones targeted the headquarters of the Peshmerga’s Unit 70 Command, affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), in Sulaimani. Footage circulating online depicted the moment of impact and the subsequent fire at the base.

The strikes continued well into Sunday, with several drones hitting an area near the five-star Titanic Hotel. The United Nations office and the Turkish consulate in Sulaimani are located in that area.

The Sulaimani-based Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) later reported that six drones had struck the city: Four targeting the Unit 70 base, and two targeting an area near the UN office and the Turkish consulate.

“The Asayish teams immediately arrived at the site of both attacks and launched an investigation… the attacks did not result in any casualties,” read a statement from the security.

The Kurdistan Region has been targeted on a daily basis by Iran and its proxies since the war with the US and Israel began last week, despite Kurdish leaders repeatedly stressing that the Region should not be dragged into conflict.

The attacks on the Kurdistan Region have mainly targeted the US Consulate General in Erbil, US military sites, and bases of exiled Kurdish opposition groups from western Iran (Rojhelat).

Hours before the attack on Unit 70, an attack on The Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan headquarters in Sulaimani province’s Zrgwezala left at least one person killed and another injured.

No groups have yet claimed responsibility for the attacks on Erbil and Sulaimani. Pro-Iran Iraqi armed groups have often claimed the strikes on the Kurdistan Region since the start of the conflict.
