The Foreign Relations Department called on Baghdad to “prevent those outlawed extremist groups and factions within Iraq from continuously and without justification targeting the Kurdistan Region.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Tuesday condemned the attack on the Emirati Consulate General in Erbil the day prior, calling on Baghdad to prevent “outlaw extremist groups” from targeting the Region.

KRG’s Foreign Relations Department in a statement condemned “the unlawful attacks carried out against citizens, civil institutions, and the targeting of diplomatic missions,” recounting a Monday attack on the UAE consulate that “fortunately led to no casualties.”

A barrage of drones targeting Erbil was shot down by the US-led coalition’s defense system on Monday evening. Nonetheless, fragments of the intercepted projectiles crashed in parts of the city, with one falling close to the UAE consulate.

The Kurdistan Region has been subject to many similar attacks since the beginning of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella of pro-Iran factions within Iraq, have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks on Erbil. The IRI claimed one of Monday's attack on the Harir airbase in Erbil, claiming it “hit its target perfectly.”

While the attacks have mainly targeted US interests in the Kurdistan Region, they have also expanded to strike civilian infrastructure including hotels and neighborhoods.

The Foreign Relations Department called on Baghdad to “prevent those outlawed extremist groups and factions within Iraq from continuously and without justification targeting the Kurdistan Region.”

Kurdish authorities have condemned the attacks on numerous occasions with President Masoud Barzani warning that “patience also has limits,” and stating that “this warmongering and disruption of the Kurdistan Region's stability and citizens' security by those groups cannot and must not continue.”

The UAE “strongly condemned” the “unprovoked terrorist drone attack” on its consulate in a statement on Tuesday. The Emirati foreign ministry called on the Iraqi government and the KRG to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable.

Iran and its proxies have targeted what they view as American and Israeli interests across the Middle East since the war began on February 28.

The attack on the UAE consulate has also been condemned by regional states, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan.

The Iraqi foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned attacks targeting diplomatic missions in Baghdad and Erbil, describing the acts as “reprehensible”.

The ministry reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to providing diplomatic missions with “full protection,” adding that authorities are investigating “any incidents targeting these missions,” with due legal measures to be taken against perpetrators.
