ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Renewed strikes on Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region on Friday killed at least two and injured several others.
Positions of the Iranian Kurdistan Struggle (Khabat) were targeted near Erbil, killing at least two of its members and injuring four others, according to the Oslo-based Hengaw Human Rights.
“The crimes committed by this regime against the Kurdish people and the peoples of Iran will not go unanswered; they will ultimately be met with justice through the steadfast and unwavering struggle of the peoples of Iran,” Khabat said in a statement.
The Azadi camp, which houses families of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), in Erbil’s Koya was also targeted with “at least five missiles and drones,” according to the party.
“At 15:40 local time today, Iran launched a coordinated strike targeting the civilian residents of the Azadi base, with at least five missiles and drones confirmed to have impacted the site. Critically, residential houses of civilian families affiliated with the PDKI were directly targeted,” the KDPI said in a statement.
Since the US-Israeli war on Iran started on February 28, the Islamic republic has launched over 25 missile and drone attacks on KDPI bases, the statement added.
“The cumulative impact has been devastating: civilian life within these residential camps has been severely disrupted, and conditions for many families have become nothing short of catastrophic.”
The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s “egregious attacks” against its regional neighbors, specifically condemning attacks against residential areas and civilian objects.
KDPI urged the international community to “move beyond condemnation and take concrete, enforceable action,” stressing: “Words issued from the United Nations must carry consequences.”
Iran has launched a retaliatory campaign across the region following the large-scale US and Israeli attacks that resulted in the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in addition to several other top Iranian officials.
Earlier in February, Kurdish opposition groups from western Iran (Rojhelat) formed a joint coalition aimed at toppling the Iranian regime and they have been a prime target for Iran in the Kurdistan Region since the hostilities began.
