ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Saturday said that the "decision to wage war" lies solely with the state, while condemning recent attacks on diplomatic missions across the country.
The Iraqi premier vowed to pursue those involved in the "condemned and unacceptable" attacks on several diplomatic missions across the country, warning that the aggression exposes Iraq to "serious consequences."
"The state, through its institutions, is responsible for the decision to wage war," Sudani said in an Iftar with a number of religious scholars, adding that its the state's duty to "monopolize all means of force."
Several Iran-backed Iraqi militias have repeatedly targeted the Kurdistan Region since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran in late February. The US embassy in Baghdad and US bases located in the international airport have also come under repeated attacks since the beginning of the conflict.
The Iraqi foreign ministry also condemned the attacks targeting diplomatic missions in the country, reaffirming Baghdad's "commitment to ensuring the security and safety of all diplomatic and consular missions and their staff."
Iraq's parliament speaker Haibat al-Halbousi described the attacks on diplomatic missions as a "flagrant violation of international law and norms," warning that the attacks constitute "a threat to the country's security and stability, as well as an attempt to drag Iraq into circles of tension and escalation."
Groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella of pro-Iran factions, have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks on Erbil and US and coalition bases in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Many factions within the IRI have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Kurdish authorities have repeatedly called on Baghdad to rein in the militias and hold those responsible accountable.
