Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Iraqi prime minister, said that investigations are “ongoing regarding the operations in which attacks were directed at diplomatic missions and embassies.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Iraqi government on Sunday confirmed that investigations into attacks on embassies and diplomatic missions in the country are “ongoing,” slamming them as “terrorist acts.”

Embassies and diplomatic facilities in Iraq, particularly the US Embassy in Baghdad, have come under constant drone and rocket attacks by Iran and its Iraqi proxy militias since the outbreak of the US-Israel war on Iran over three weeks ago.

The attacks have severely degraded Iraq’s security at a time when the country was recovering and stabilizing after the years-long war against the Islamic State (ISIS). Baghdad has been drawn into a war it sought to avoid.

Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Iraqi prime minister, said that investigations are “ongoing regarding the operations in which attacks were directed at diplomatic missions and embassies.”

“They are terrorist acts and condemned because they cause embarrassment to Iraq, undermine its diplomatic standing, and could cause its isolation in the international community,” Numan told state media.

On Tuesday, Numan said that Baghdad will show “no hesitation or restraint” in punishing “outlaw groups” who have repeatedly targeted US diplomatic missions in the country.

The attacks have been widely condemned by Iraqi, Kurdish, and international authorities, with the US Consulate General in Erbil and American military bases in the Kurdistan Region also suffering from repeated attacks.

Numan stressed that the Iraqi government has “always worked to restore Iraq’s international standing, be influential, and be part of the solution to the region’s problems.”

Similar attacks on US interests and hotels housing foreign nationals in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have previously been claimed by pro-Iran Iraqi militias, often operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI).

Many factions within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

On Saturday, the headquarters of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS) in Baghdad was targeted by a drone strike, killing one INIS member.
