ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran's foreign ministry said Monday that it has "not responded" to US requests for negotiations, after US President Donald Trump announced a five-day halt to targeting Iranian energy infrastructure, citing "productive" talks with Tehran.
“The false claim by the US is an escape route that it has chosen to compensate for its disgrace in failing against our country,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told state media.
The foreign ministry's statement comes hours after Trump said on Truth Social that the US and Iran have been engaged in "very good and productive" talks over the last two days regarding a "complete and total resolution" to the hostilities between them.
Media affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) promptly denied Trump's claims. Citing an unnamed source, Fars News said: “There is no direct or indirect connection with Trump; he retreated after hearing that our targets will be all power plants in West Asia.”
Baghaei denied "any negotiations or talks with the US during the past 24 days of the imposed war," and stressed that Tehran's position regarding the Strait of Hormuz and the conditions for ending war "has not changed."
"In recent days, messages have been received through some friendly countries indicating the US request for negotiations to end the war, which were appropriately answered according to the country's principled positions," Baghaei said.
In addition to the Iranian foreign ministry, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also denied the claim, writing in an X post: "No negotiations have been held with the US, and fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped."
The US-Israeli war on Iran, and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Iran's retaliatory strikes on Middle Eastern and Gulf countries have driven oil prices significantly higher.
Moments after Trump's announcement, global oil prices plunged by 14 percent, down to 96 dollars per barrel, according to Bloomberg.
Asked about Iranian media's denial of the talks, Trump told Fox Business earlier on Monday in a phone call that he is not sure what they are referring to, because the most recent talks “happened last night."
The American president told reporters later in West Palm Beach that there are communication issues in Iran due to the bombing it has been subjected to during the war, that is why they are not aware of the talks.
Trump said there are “like 15 points of agreement with Iran,” stressing that the first three points pertain to the country “never” having a nuclear weapon.
