"The blood of our martyrs has never gone to waste, and this time it will not go to waste either," said Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday attended the funeral of Peshmerga fighters who were killed in an Iranian missile strike on Erbil's Soran the day prior, lamenting the loss of the Kurdish personnel who "were attacked without reason or cause."

An Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Peshmerga's bases in the Soran administration early Tuesday killed six Peshmerga and injured 30 others, the Peshmerga ministry announced.

"Those martyrs are the martyrs of treachery and betrayal, who were attacked without reason or cause — that attack was carried out against the Peshmerga forces, and a number of our Peshmerga were martyred," Barzani said at a press conference following the funeral. "Without a doubt, it is the blood of those martyrs that becomes the reason for the pride and glory of the nation."

"The blood of our martyrs has never gone to waste, and this time it will not go to waste either."

The Iranian attack drew widespread criticism from officials in the Kurdistan Region and further afield, with President Masoud Barzani calling it "hostile and utterly unjustified."

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday said that Iranian officials contacted Erbil and said that the strike was a "mistake" and promised to duly investigate the matter.

The Region has repeatedly come under fire from both Iran and pro-Iran Iraqi factions since the launching of a US-Israeli military intervention against the Islamic Republic in late February, with the conflict's spillover having led to myriad countries in the Middle East being targeted by one or, in the case of Iraq, both sides.

"We do not want to be involved in any war, and we want our Kurdistan to be protected. Whatever is necessary to defend the dignity, rights, and soil of our own nation, we will do it and we will continue," Prime Minister Barzani said at the Wednesday event.

Erbil has also repeatedly called on Baghdad to rein in the activities of pro-Iran groups that are under the auspices of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and thus the Iraqi state, with these such factions being repeatedly targeted by the US and Israel.

"In recent weeks, we have repeatedly requested that Iraqi authorities provide information about the locations of Iraqi Security Forces to promote the safety of forces on the ground that are not involved in attacks against the United States," a US State Department official told The New Region on Wednesday.

"The Iraqi government has not provided this information," the official said.
