ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Several European consuls have offered their condolences to Kurdistan Region leaders and the families of the six Peshmerga killed in an Iranian missile strike in a joint letter, offering their "heartfelt solidarity" in light of the incident.
An Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Peshmerga's bases in the Soran administration early Tuesday killed six Peshmerga and injured 30 others, the Peshmerga ministry announced, with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani later saying that Iran informed Erbil that the base was targeted by mistake.
The EU message, dated March 26, was addressed to Nechirvan Barzani, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and was first made publicly available on Friday.
The message was issued by the consuls general of France, Czechia, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, and Poland, as well as other, non-national EU entities.
“We learned with great concern about the missile attack that took place Tuesday in the Soran region, following several weeks of relentless attacks affecting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” the EU said in a statement.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences for the six Peshmerga members who lost their lives as well as for the many that were injured in this deplorable moment,” the letter added, saying “Our thoughts and support go with their families and their loved ones.”
The statement expressed the union’s “heartfelt message of solidarity with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and its people.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also in a phone call with Prime Minister Barzani on Thursday, offered his condolences for the Peshmerga killed and injured in an Iranian strike earlier this week.
Washington strongly condemned the continued attacks “by Iran and Iran-aligned Iraqi terrorist militias against US citizens and energy infrastructure across Iraq,” Rubio said.
Tehran has contacted Erbil and informed the government that the strike was "a mistake" and will be duly investigated, Kurdistan Region President Barzani asserted on Wednesday.
Since the US-Israeli war with Iran started in late February with strikes across the country, Iran has carried out retaliatory strikes across the region, particularly on US interests.
The Kurdistan Region has also come under near-daily attacks by pro-Iran militias, with Kurdish authorities repeatedly urging Baghdad to rein them in.
A French soldier was killed after a strike on a Peshmerga base near Erbil earlier this month, with several injured, including a separate drone strike on a military site used by Italian forces in Erbil the night before that caused no casualties.
