ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - An Iraqi soldier was wounded and one fighter from Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) was killed in a strike near the Iraq-Syria border early Saturday, coming after the US previously blamed Baghdad for not disclosing where its conventional forces are co-located at PMF sites.
The PMF, officially under the auspices of the Iraqi state, contain pro-Iran factions that have repeatedly targeted US interests in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq since the beginning of a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran in late February.
The strike targeted the 45th Brigade within the PMF’s al-Jazira Operations sector at a border crossing in al-Qaim district, Anbar province, at around 5:10 am, the PMF said, adding that four of its personnel were wounded in addition to a "member of the Ministry of Defense."
The force described the incident as a “treacherous US-Israeli attack.”
The United States said previously that it had repeatedly asked Iraqi authorities to provide the locations of Iraqi security forces not involved in attacks against US interests, in an effort to avoid hitting them during strikes on PMF sites.
"In recent weeks, we have repeatedly requested that Iraqi authorities provide information about the locations of Iraqi Security Forces to promote the safety of forces on the ground that are not involved in attacks against the United States," a State Department official told The New Region.
"The Iraqi government has not provided this information," the official said.
The comments came amid intensified US-Israeli strikes targeting Iran-aligned groups within the PMF, alongside ongoing attacks by those factions against US interests in Iraq.
