"So approximately at this day, we're spending about $25 billion on Operation Epic Fury. Most of that is munitions," said US Under Secretary of Defense Jules Hurst.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - During a congressional hearing on Wednesday, a top Pentagon official said that Washington has spent $25 billion so far on the war with Iran, coming as US lawmakers questioned the Trump administration's foresight regarding the economic impacts of the military campaign.

US Under Secretary of Defense Jules Hurst, when questioned by a Democratic lawmaker in a session of the US House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday, said that Washington has spent $25 billion so far on the war with Iran.

“So approximately at this day, we're spending about $25 billion on Operation Epic Fury. Most of that is munitions,” he declared, adding, “We will formulate a supplemental [budget] through the White House that will come to Congress once we have a full assessment of the cost of the conflict.”

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later disputed Hurst’s claim in the same hearing, asserting that current estimates actually place the figure below $25 billion. In response, sidestepping questions about the war's price tag, he asked lawmakers what price they would be willing to pay to "ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon."

When asked if the Pentagon foresaw Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a retaliatory measure, something that has wreaked havoc on the global economy and caused oil prices to skyrocket, Hegseth responded that they "looked at all aspects of this risk."

Following an extensive air campaign launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, US President Donald Trump has indefinitely extended an initial 14-day ceasefire. However, while the move has halted active fighting, the conflict remains unresolved amid widespread and mounting economic fallout.

The US has lost multiple military aircraft during its war on Iran, CNN reported in early April, including F-15s, KC-135 tankers, E-3 Sentry airborne early warning and control planes, and A-10 attack aircraft.
