ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The UAE’s defense ministry on Monday said that its air defenses shot down three cruise missile launched from Iran, and a fourth one fell into the sea, with three Indian nationals sustaining injuries.
“Four cruise missiles were detected coming from Iran towards the country. Three missiles were successfully dealt with over the country’s territorial waters, and another fell into the sea,” the defense ministry said in a statement.
The announcement came after the country’s residents received phone alerts of a potential missile strike, urging them to take shelter in a safe location.
The ministry said that “the sounds heard in various parts of the country were the result of the successful interception of aerial threats.”
In another statement on Monday, the Fujairah media office said an Iranian attack on the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ) moderately wounded three Indian nationals.
The renewed aggression comes after weeks of tense calm across the region, amid a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran that was announced on April 8. The attack marks the first one since the start of the ceasefire.
Shortly after the first round, the defense ministry announced that its air defenses were engaging oncoming missile and UAV threats again on Monday evening.
Earlier in the day, the UAE’s foreign ministry said an Iranian drone attack targeted an ADNOC affiliated tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
It condemned the incident as a "serious violation of international law, warning that targeting commercial shipping threatens regional stability and global energy security," and called for an "immediate halt to escalation and the reopening of the strait"
During the active conflict between the US and Iran before April 8, the UAE was one of Iran’s most salient targets, having been targeted by over 500 ballistic missiles, 26 cruise missiles, and over 2,000 drones.
Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have stalled since the ceasefire began, with no clear timeline for when face-to-face talks might resume.
Iran's foreign ministry said on Sunday that the US has responded to a Tehran proposal through Pakistani mediators, adding that the reply is currently under review.
