"This return stems from our legal and national responsibility to follow up on the implementation of the agreements and understandings related to guaranteeing constitutional, legal, and financial rights," the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said in a statement.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Wednesday announced that they will end their boycott of the Iraqi parliament after "positive understandings were reached among the political forces," citing Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi's visit to Erbil as a step that facilitated their return.

Amid a fractious Iraqi presidential election in April that saw KDP claims of a lack of political consensus, the Kurdish party announced that it would be withdrawing from Baghdad indefinitely.

"We reaffirm that safeguarding the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan and preserving the legitimacy of the political process take precedence over all considerations and interests," the KDP said at the time.

The appointment of Zaidi as premier-to-be was greeted with optimism by the KDP, with President Masoud Barzani expressing his hope that his tenure would offer "an opportunity to correct the course of the political process."

"Following the positive understandings reached among the political forces — particularly after the visit of the Prime Minister-designate and a high-level delegation from the Coordination Framework to the Kurdistan Region, and their discussions with the political leadership of our party — and in continuation of these efforts through the visit of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s negotiating delegation to Baghdad aimed at reaching fundamental solutions, our bloc has decided to resume its parliamentary duties and activities within the Iraqi Council of Representatives," the KDP announced on Wednesday.

"This return stems from our legal and national responsibility to follow up on the implementation of the agreements and understandings related to guaranteeing constitutional, legal, and financial rights," the statement added.

"At the same time, we reaffirm that we will remain at the forefront in defending and securing the full legitimate rights of all Iraqis, including the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan."

During Zaidi's visit, the businessman discussed the government formation process and the resolution of Erbil-Baghdad disputes with Kurdish leaders.

Ashwaq Jaf, a member of the KDP Central Committee, said Saturday that Zaidi has received a "strong welcome" by all political forces in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, expressing hopes that progress can be made in tackling the issues during his tenure

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani visited Baghdad subsequently, meeting with high-profile Iraqi leaders.

Sherwan al-Dubardany, a member of the Iraqi parliament from the KDP bloc, told The New Region earlier on Wednesday that the bloc will return to Baghdad next week and participate in parliament sessions to vote on the cabinet proposed by Zaidi.

A Coordination Framework meeting set to finalize the proposed cabinet will be held on Wednesday night.
