ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - At least one person was killed and five others injured due to celebratory fire in Rojava’s (northeast Syria) Hasaka on Friday during the reception of over 230 prisoners released by Damascus as part of the January 29 deal with Kurdish authorities.
In the most recent release, which the Kurdish-led internal security forces (Asayish) said included over 230 prisoners earlier in the day, celebratory shooting injured six, with one later dying from their injuries, according to local media, which added that among the wounded are women and children.
The planned releases are seen as a key confidence-building measure under the January 29 deal, which includes broader efforts to ease tensions and advance integration arrangements in Rojava.
The January ceasefire and integration agreement was signed after weeks of an intense military confrontation between the two sides, which began in early January after Damascus-backed factions advanced into Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)-held areas.
Last month, 400 Asayish members were released with another batch of 300 released a month prior.
Earlier On March 11, the Syrian government released approximately 100 SDF prisoners in a one-for-one exchange with Kurdish-led forces.
“We emphasise that this group is not the last, and our efforts will not stop until this file is fully concluded,” Asayish said in a statement ahead of the prisoners arriving.
